SAN FRANCISCO (cont.)

The 1930's saw the construction of both of the city's iconic bridges: the more famous Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge.

The United Nations was founded in San Francisco in 1945, an event marked by the somewhat unattractive UN plaza with it's hideous concrete fountain.

Later events include the development of the Beat Movement in the 1950's led by literary figures such as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac and the opening of the City Lights bookstore in North Beach. This movement was rapidly succeeded by the Hippies in the 1960's (see below).

The city today is a diverse mix of peoples and cultures, of art, architecture and entertainment, and arguably the most attractive city in the United States. Inevitably the city has her flaws, however those points in San Francisco's favour vastly outweigh the negatives.

City Hall

Completed in 1915 to coincide with the Panama Pacific Exposition, the elaborate City Hall was designed by Arthur Brown to replace the previous structure devastated by the earthquake and fire of 1906. The Baroque dome is based upon that of St Peter's in Rome and is higher than that of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.

City Hall was the unfortunate setting for the appalling assassination of the Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in 1978 by an unbalanced former policeman and supervisor, Dan White.

A new Gus Van Sant film, 'Milk,' starring Sean Penn and James Franco will be released in January 2009 (in the UK).

The 1960's

In 1967 the Haight Ashbury district was flooded by up to half a million people during the so-named 'Summer of Love.' Many, or most were attracted in part by the numerous bands and performers installed at such venues as the now famous Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom: such as Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, The Grateful Dead and Santana.

Below: many posters, flyers and cards were produced to advertise concerts, festivals and other events, often as colourful examples of psychedelic art.
