Lanercost Priory, Cumbria

An Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in 1166 and closed by another King Henry in 1536. Part of the buildings became incorporated in a private residence, the remainder becoming ruinous and partly quarried away for building works elsewhere.

The church was an empty shell until 1720 when the nave (the ‘front’ wing) was re-roofed and restored for parish use. The remainder is now maintained and opened to the public by English Heritage.

The Lake District, Cumbria

A mountainous lakeland region in the north west corner of England, popular with poets, artists and all types of tourists since the eighteenth century. Some of the photos were taken near the edge of Coniston Water and on the woodland slopes of the surrounding mountains.
Another photo depicts a section of the ancient Neolithic stone circle of Castlerigg which survives on a hill top near the town of Keswick and the lake, Derwentwater. This dates to 3000 BCE.
