The west front of the church |
Kirkstall Abbey A once relatively isolated Cistercian abbey now swallowed by the growing suburbs of Leeds. The ruins are amongst the best preserved in the country, now set in parkland with a museum and exhibition centre.

The former gatehouse to the monastery |
The cloister court area |

The precarious looking shard of the central tower stands to it's full height as do the walls of the remainder of the church, many parts of which even retain their ceiling vaults. Below left: a view from the nave of the crossing area and the presbytery which still retains it's vault intact. The incongruous extra column and filled in arch help to support the remaining facades of the central tower. Below right: the west end of the nave.

The vast east window of the church, having lost all of its tracery stonework, now frames the park landscape beyond.
Below: the central tower from inside the nave, and; a view along the south aisle. |
