Harewood House: Gardens

The Himalayan Garden:

At one end of the lake there is an impressive and newly replanted Himalayan Garden, divided by a river with a series of cascades filling the garden with the crashing sound of water. This river is crossed by using either the arched wooden bridge or by high stepping stones. There is a wealth of Asian and more domestic plants and the scene is overlooked by the Buddhist stupa monument (left).

The stupa (or chorten) is a Tibetan Buddhist monument found in varying sizes and complexities across the Himalayas in particular, other parts of Asia and more recently across the world. A far larger stupa that contains a shrine room is to be found at the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Centre in Scotland (The link connects to my photo galleries of this Centre). 

This example was constructed by Yorkshire craftsmen using mainly local materials, under the supervision of a Lama from the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.
