Harewood House: The Church

The elaborate tomb within the north aisle of the church retains it's relief images of saints and angels. These carvings are surprisingly little damaged despite the Reformation, the civil war, and the fact that most of these tombs clearly have at some point been dismantled.

These images further demonstrate the elaborate, high quality carving and focus in particular (below) upon a very unusual and possibly unique carving of a cowled figure of a bedesman, bizarrely appearing against the sole of the lords shoe.

Above: details of one of the two archway tombs that mirror each other across the chancel.

Left: looking from the chancel back down into the nave. The church is also the burial place of the 6th Earl and his wife, the previous Princess Royal, daughter of King George V.

Left: the southern of the two 'archway' tombs, with a later 17th or 18th century marble monument visible beyond.

This effigy tomb once appears to have had stone or wooden figures of saints affixed to the sides, in a similar style to the other monuments. Now only the traces of the canopies remain and the rusted remnants of the attachments.
