Harewood House: The Church

Located in the grounds, the 15th century former collegiate church, now redundant, houses a superb group of 15th and early 16th century alabaster effigy tombs, arguably the best to survive in England. The figures are of the Lords and Ladies of the Harewood and Gawthorpe estates, and display an impressive array of medieval armour, the judicial dress and ladies fashion of the period.

Left & below: the double tomb of Lord Chief Justice William Gascoigne, characterised by Shakespeare in Henry IV. William famously refused Henry's demand that sentence should be passed upon the conspirators (which included the archbishop of York) of the 1405 rising in the north, without a trial. He was also said to have committed the Prince of Wales to prison for striking the judge at the trial of a friend.

Above right: one of a series of faintly disturbing angels which decorate the sides of the Justice Gascoigne tomb.

Left: Further images of the unusual effigy of William Gascoigne.

Below: Images showing the remarkable detail of the armour and trappings of one of the lords.
