St Oswald's Church and cemetery. The church dates from the 12th to 14th centuries and the surrounding churchyard contains many 17th to 19th century monuments.

A footpath leads through and down to the riverside. Down the bank from the path, and not far from the church, is the neglected site of a sacred spring. This emerges from a tiny, ivy shrouded cave, flowing down into the River Wear. It was once faced with a Romanesque archway which has long since vanished.

There are many springs emerging on both sides of the river, some of which were considered sacred in times past. Some have dried up and the only obvious evidence for them is the remnants of the man made structures built to encase them. These are now overgrown and forgotten and in at least one case, badly vandalised by the usual spray can wielding morons.

The riverside area has changed, mainly through natural development but also through changes of use. Early engravings depict terraced gardens mainly on the slopes of the peninsula, which have now gone, becoming overgrown and basically left to nature with only the occasional low wall or ruinous steps discernable amongst the foliage.
