The Percy Tomb

The Percy Tomb canopy is one of the masterpieces of English Decorated stone carving and was built between 1340 and 1349.
It was most likely constructed to commemorate Eleanor, daughter of Richard Fitz-Alan, Earl of Arundel, and widow of Lord Henry Percy, of Alnwick who died in 1314. Eleanor died in 1328.

The tomb bears the arms of Edward III and is a riot of sculpture with angels, saints, and armoured knights amongst carved foliage. Until 1820 a tomb chest rested on the ledge beneath the canopy.

The chancel and east end

Left: The great east window containing original medieval glass.

Below: A view of the choir facing towards the east.

Also: three images of carvings to the mainly 15th century choir stalls. The misercord (seat) carving appears to show a hunting scene.

A final, later view of the south transept, this time bathed in the late morning sunlight as the clouds recede for a time.
