A still impressive and dominating medieval fortress with later additions. An important architectural and historical landmark, the castle is however still in use as a prison and courthouse!

Three views of the outer walls of the castle. The gatehouse is especially significant being a rare survivor of it's type, dating from the 14th century.

One of the more pleasant areas of this city, surrounding the castle, with cobbled streets of attractive Georgian and Victorian buildings.

Lancaster Priory Church

The most significant, attractive and accessible of Lancaster's landmarks is that of the medieval former priory church which sits on the hilltop position beside the castle.

The Benedictine monastery was founded in the 11th century by a distant relative of William the Conqueror, on a site of roman occupation. The present church is mainly 15th century. It became the property of Syon Abbey in Surrey in the 1400's and was additionally used as the parish church for Lancaster from this point. As usual, the monastic institution ceased in 1539 and it became solely parochial.
