Belsay Hall, Northumberland

The neo classical hall and medieval castle (old hall) are the centrepieces of a large estate which once belong to the Middleton family. They resided in the castle until the beginning of the nineteenth century at which point the ‘new’ hall was constructed.

The structure is an usually severe and impressive recreation of Greek temple architecture. They lived here until 1962. The estate also features gardens including a converted quarry garden with tropical plants and extensive woodlands.

The hall, castle and grounds are now in the care of English Heritage.

The photos show several of the interiors of the now empty, unfurnished hall. The Pillar Hall, Library and two of the bedrooms with their stained plaster and remnants of cluttered, grotesque victorian wallpaper.

Other photos show the cliff faces and plants of the quarry gardens, woodland areas and a small lake.

A pathway through the quarry gardens. The old quarry supplied the stone for the building of the house (and probably the earlier castle).

Finally, there is a view of the castle (old hall). The battlemented medieval tower of the castle has been re-roofed and glazed and still retains sections of wall paintings showing coats-of-arms against a woodland background. The remainder is a roofless ruin. A medieval stone cross stands nearby, the only remnant of the old village of Belsay, cleared away in the 19th century and replaced by the new village a mile or so away.
