St Bees Priory, Cumbria

An ancient church, the remnant of a small priory of Benedictine monks founded after 1120.
The priory was dissolved in 1538 and the buildings soon became ruinous. In the seventeenth century the process began to preserve most of the church for local use.

The chancel was walled off from the remainder and is now used as a community hall with an odd blend of ancient and modern features (as shown). In 1981 the church was the site of the discovery of a remarkably well preserved body believed to be of a local lord who died in the fifteenth century.
The photos show two views of the east end of the church.

Lanercost Priory, Cumbria

An Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in 1166 and closed by another King Henry in 1536. Part of the buildings became incorporated in a private residence, the remainder becoming ruinous and partly quarried away for building works elsewhere.

The church was an empty shell until 1720 when the nave (the ‘front’ wing) was re-roofed and restored for parish use. The remainder is now maintained and opened to the public by English Heritage.
The photos show interior views of the ruinous east end of the church.

The Lake District, Cumbria

A mountainous lakeland region in the north west corner of England, popular with poets, artists and all types of tourists since the eighteenth century. Some of the photos were taken near the edge of Coniston Water and on the woodland slopes of the surrounding mountains.
Another photo depicts a section of the ancient Neolithic stone circle of Castlerigg which survives on a hill top near the town of Keswick and the lake, Derwentwater. This dates to 3000 BCE.
