Whitby Abbey and Town |
|
|
The abbey was extensively and elaborately rebuilt in the 13th -14th
centuries which led to financial ruin and it’s existence finally ceased
in 1539 under the dissolution after which much of the site was cleared,
leaving only the dramatic shell of the church. Much of this collapsed
during the 17th and 18th centuries and was even fired upon by the German
navy during World War I. |

The abbey and town are both famously associated with Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula.’ Much of the novel was written here and in this, Dracula enters England from a ship wrecked off the coast at Whitby. Due to this association, the town is abundant in black clad goths, gargoyle sculptures and copies of the novel. For that matter it very popular with just about everyone. |
