The abbey ruins are situated in a wooded hollow and has amongst the finest setting of any ruin in the country.

In 1805 the ruins were commemorated in a poem by Wordsworth.

The abbey traded in wool and iron and built a harbour on Walney Island in support of this.

The abbey also had some fortified sites in the area and was the victim of several raids by the Scots during the medieval period.

Stephen, Earl of Bolougne and later King, founded the monastery in the 12th century for mainly superstitious reasons and it became the second largest in England.
