Newby Hall, nr Ripon
A 17th-18th century mansion, heavily altered in the neo classical style after 1760, following the owners excursion on the grand tour. The renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam carried out much of this work and the house became a showpiece for the varied and numerous items brought back from the continent.

The three part sculpture gallery was created out of an orangery and was Robert Adams most significant works within the house, and overall during his career. It was commissioned to house the large collection of ancient classical sculpture mainly acquired in Rome on the grand tour. The statues include a 1st century roman figure of a male and a bust of the emperor Caracalla to the right

Several more of the roman sculptures including the famous Barberini Venus (in the right hand alcove) . This 1st-2nd century statue was once housed in the Barberini Palace in Rome, and subsequently bought by banker Thomas Jenkins in 1765. It was kept from then until 2002 at Newby Hall, to be sold at auction for a record breaking sum of nearly £8 million. The sculpture photographed is an exact replica of remarkable quality.
