Berwick on Tweed (England/Borders) This is the northern most town in England, two and a half miles from the border. Between 1147 and 1482, the town changed hands between English and Scottish rule at least 14 times. It was destroyed in 1216 by King John and again in 1296 by Edward I who had virtually the entire population slaughtered. With this and various other border conflicts it is a wonder that anyone would continue to live there throughout the medieval period. |

In the mid 16th century, a fortune was paid to construct the massive and elaborate fortifications in the Italian style. Much of these still survive and dominate the town as the three photos above demonstrate. |
In 1639, the army of Charles I faced that of General Leslie in the so called Bishops Wars, fought with aim of bringing the Presbyterian church of Scotland under the King's control. A settlement, known as the 'Pacification of Berwick,' was reached before fighting occurred. |

Above: Berwick Barracks; the first of such buildings in England, completed in 1721. Left and below: The unusual parish church built in 1650-52 during the commonwealth period, one of only two built at this time. It does not have a steeple and replaced a medieval church destroyed by Cromwell. It may have been built reusing stone from the castle ruins. |
