Samye Ling, nr. Eskdalemuir, Scotland

Kagyu Samye Ling is the first and largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery and retreat centre established in the west, founded in 1967.

The new and almost complete main entrance gate to the complex

Bottom left: a pathway leading from the entrance driveway towards the great stupa monument, a combination of shrine, reliquary and a representation of the Buddhist universe.

The main temple building dominates what will one day become the central courtyard at the nucleus of the college and monastery.

The building is constructed according to traditional Tibetan design and is profusely decorated, especially within.

Situated in a peaceful borders valley, Samye is a centre for Tibetan culture, striving to help preserve the country’s Buddhist teachings, arts, and medicine. It is open to all, with ready access to the main temple, gardens/grounds and a tearoom for residents and casual visitors.

Left and below: Three interior images of some of the many Buddhist sculptures in the temple.
