Dunstanburgh Castle Dating from the 14th century, this was amongst the greatest of the northern fortresses, built by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster and later owned and adapted by John of Gaunt. It is now an impressive and atmospheric ruin, isolated on a craggy headland overlooking the sea. |

With sheer cliff faces on two sides and impressive stretches of coastline this has been a popular destination with a variety of visitors during the last two centuries. It was the subject of several paintings by Turner. The walk to the castle takes at least 20 - 30 minutes from any direction and the site in now managed by English Heritage. |
| The photos show the approach to the substantial main gatehouse, the ‘teeth’ of the isolated Lilburn tower and the rocky coastline about the site. |
